Pentecost Dinner Recap

On June 16, 2024, about thirty church members celebrated Pentecost in the Fellowship room at the church. We had a fellowship meal and learned how Pentecost is the day on which we renew our covenant with God. After Jesus ascended to heaven, God renewed His covenant with His people by pouring out His Holy Spirit on them as they were gathered together in the upper room. He wants to do the same for us. “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people” Jeremiah 31: 33 (ESV). Our prayer should be that God writes His law in our hearts. The next feast is the Feast of Trumpets which comes on the first day of the seventh month of the Jewish year. This year it will come on October 5 which is a Sabbath day. I believe that the next big event in the plan of salvation is prophesied by the Feast of Trumpets.

Victory Over Death

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore, encourage one another with these words:” 1 Thess. 4:16,17.

A few months ago, my friend, Carl Divert, passed away. This was a significant event in my life because it was unexpected and because I spoke with Carl almost daily for the last 30 years. I knew Carl was sick, but during our final conversations, he never let on that he was saying goodbye softly.

One day, as I sat in class at Andrews University, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Carl introduced himself, and since those many years ago, there has not been a day that Carl has not reached out to share God's love. Through Carl, I felt God's personal and intimate connection with my existence because Carl was God's response to a child's request.

I remember begging Mom and Dad for a big brother. Dad was always busy, and I wanted a Big Brother, maybe even a father, to guide me through the ropes of all that was occurring to a growing young man. Carl was the closest thing to a brother I had. Most assured, God’s answer to my prayer.

Carl stood at a towering 6'3” compared to my 5’8”, with a personality even larger. Carl was a loyal friend, an unrelenting advisor who never took no for an answer. He listened through the most challenging times of my life, and through Carl's dedicated friendship, I knew that God cared.

I don't know why Carl fell asleep so soon, but I hope to see him again. My commitment is to daily accept God’s grace and gift of the Holy Spirit so that I may continue to grow in Christ’s image.

"From the prison house of death, he will come, clothed with immortal glory, crying: 'O death, where is your sting? O death, where is your victory?'" 1 Corinthians 15:55
